In a passage from Journal, Stendhal refers to the syndrome produced by the excess of culture in Italy: "If the foreigner who enters St. Peter's tries to see everything, he will end up dizzy and fed up, so that in the long run he will be unable to feel any pleasure" - San Pietro in Vincoli, especially to see the tomb of Julius II by Michelangelo. - San Luigi dei Francesi, for the three magnificent Caravaggio. - Piazza di Spagna, for its scenographic character and its atmosphere day and night at all times of the year. - Trevi Fountain, for its emblematic character, reminiscent of Fellini's "La Dolce Vita". The most original view of the square from the terrace of the Mondadori bookstore. - San Clemente, for including many centuries of history of the city, in its catacombs, in its Mithraic temple, in the Romanesque church; for the mosaics, the 11th century frescoes and the 15th century Renaissance ones. - Sta. Maria in Trastevere, for its mosaics by Pietro Cavallini and for being the perfect place from which to explore this neighborhood, the most traditional of the city. - Stadio Olimpico, half-forgotten for its links with the Mussolini era. It is a tremendously attractive building with dozens of statues of athletes. - San Pietro in Montorio in the Gianicolo. It is somehow in 'Spanish territory' and includes several masterpieces including Bramante's tempietto, a tiny but very important building in the Italian Renaissance. A good excuse to climb this treasure-filled hill overlooking an unusual Rome. - The Catacombs of San Callisto and San Sebastiano on the Appian Way. Not suitable for those who suffer from claustrophobia but essential to understand a moment in the history of the city. - A boat trip on the Tiber to see another perspective of the city. Afterwards, it is worthwhile to go to the Tiber Island and sit in a cafe.
