COPENHAGEN

Free day. Copenhagen must-see: 1. The Little Mermaid. Langelinie. Edward Eriksen, 1913. It is the symbol of the city. 2. Tivoli Amusement Park. The grandfather of all parks continues to renew itself without betraying its past. 3. Amalienborg Palace. The most representative work of the Danish Rococo. Christian Kirke designed by N. Eigtved in 1755. The most representative church of its time. 5. Frilandsmuseet. Ethnological museum outdoors. A way to know the best traditional architecture of the country without leaving the capital. 6. The Round Tower (1642) and its spiral staircase 209 high. It is one of the most emblematic buildings, and you can climb up to the viewpoint by a staircase reminiscent of the Giralda. 7. Church of El Salvador (1696). A unique church, where unless you suffer from vertigo you have to climb the original staircase outside the tower. 8. An excursion by the port using the yellow water bus (lines 901-902). 9. The atmosphere of Christiania, before it disappears completely. 10. The redeveloped Holmen district, with its contrasting architecture, is one of the most striking areas of the new Copenhagen. Did you know: The best view of the old city is from the Round Tower, one of the most charismatic buildings in old Copenhagen. Other good vantage points include the City Hall Tower and the Zoo Tower. In the picturesque harbor 'Nyhavn' HansChristian Andersen wrote his first stories. The terraces of the bars and cafes remain open practically all winter thanks to heating points and blankets offered to customers. Kongens Nytorv, or New King's Square, is still the meeting point between the old medieval Copenhagen and the one that emerged three hundred years ago. There is Charlottenborg now occupied by the Academy of Fine Arts, the Royal Theater, the Magasin du Nord and the Hotel d'Angleterre, the most charismatic hotel in the city. The new ARKEN contemporary art museum takes the form of a ship nestled on a beach and has been built on the outskirts facing the sea, in the middle of some dunes. The Tivoli is the grandfather of all theme parks in the world: it opened in 1843 and maintains an old and stately atmosphere. It is open from April to September but also during Christmas. Among all the 'spires' of Copenhagen, the most unusual and original is that of the Church of the Savior with its helical staircase that reaches its apex. The best stores are concentrated in the pedestrian zone that is identified with Stroget, the name of a street but also of an area. The National Museum contains one of the best collections in the world related to the Vikings and their ancestors. The municipality offers free bicycles to visitors but they can also be easily rented for very little money. Themed bike safaris are also organized. One of the most original ways to get around the city is by using the services of the Waterbus. Christiania is still an independent city or republic within the city itself although the free sale of narcotics has been restricted. Its experiments in architecture and design are worth seeing.
